Massage for the Older Child

The training provided by Infant Massage Australia we pay particular attention

to how we keep massage available for our toddlers, primary age children and teenagers.

In our module of the older child we offer strategies, and research for educators to use with parents in various settings.

Just a simple bedtime ritual that in particular is super fun for the toddler and younger child is a make-up or face -painting massage.

I am sharing my own daughters requests with her make- up massage bed time ritual. Most importantly is to note that all speaking is done with quiet voice as we are heading off to bed.

First we are in bed, and then we pretend to put on the moisturiser, hence gentle strokes all over the face as if you were putting on cream.

then, comes the foundation, and once again strokes all over the face. Beginning with the eyes sharing with your child the colours you are applying to their eyes, of course for

my daughter there is pink swirls, with orange flares, dashes of blue sparkle on the edges. The eyelashes are caressed with emerald green glitter from fairies. A cirlce application of rouge every so gentle.

The lips are daintly applied with pale pink. This beautiful exchange can be re-enacted for a few minutes until there is no more talking… Such a simple and intimate way parents can connect after a day at work.

This also can be applied to boys, and of course I have used this in an opposite scenario where it has been applying face make up for my primary aged son to be…say a zombie, or spider man! Let your young boy lead the way to your creativity

and his delight in gentle carress, to his eyes, forehead, cheeks. I pretty much use my imagination in conjunction with the strokes that are taught in our training package and modify to keep touch and connection with my children.
